Speaking with The Direct at MultiCon 2026, Gimple said the Maggie and Negan spinoff has been performing well and receiving a strong response from viewers. He stopped short of confirming a renewal but described Season 4 as having a “good shot.”
Dead City Season 3 has become the most acclaimed season of the New York-based spinoff. The season currently holds a 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, ahead of Season 1’s 80% and Season 2’s 56%.
The improvement comes after the show spent its first two seasons exploring the uneasy relationship between Maggie and Negan. Season 3 moved that story forward, with Maggie accepting Negan as family despite his role in her husband Glenn’s death.
The season finale also hinted that the story could expand beyond Manhattan. Maggie and Negan’s growing community could eventually lead the characters into other New York boroughs, giving a fourth season a larger setting and new conflicts to explore.
Gimple explained that television renewals are more complicated now than they were during the original The Walking Dead series. When he served as showrunner, ratings provided a clearer idea of how long a series could continue.
Streaming has changed that process. Audience numbers, viewing habits, and production costs now play a much larger role, making it harder to predict how much time a show has left.
Even with that uncertainty, Gimple said the larger Walking Dead universe will continue regardless of what happens with Dead City. The franchise remains a major priority for AMC, although future spinoffs will arrive at a slower pace.
Gimple previously indicated that the company wants to reduce the urgency and speed surrounding new seasons. That approach could mean fewer shows arriving at once and longer gaps between releases.
The next confirmed project is The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 4, which is scheduled to debut in early 2027. The final season will follow Daryl and Carol through Spain and conclude Norman Reedus’ European-set spinoff.
A future crossover project has also been rumored, and Dead City potentially ending after four seasons could help create space for the franchise’s surviving characters to reunite.
AMC has not announced a fourth-season renewal yet, but the timing may be approaching. Season 2 was renewed shortly before its first finale, while Season 3 was announced about a month after Season 2 ended.
For now, Gimple’s comments give Dead City fans a reason to keep hoping. The series has its strongest critical response yet, its story is moving into a new phase, and the wider Walking Dead universe is still being developed.
