The idea would have explored Carl’s shift toward pacifism between Seasons 7 and 8
Summary
– Chandler Riggs pitched a Carl Grimes spinoff set between Seasons 7 and 8
– The story would have explored how Carl went from ready to fight to rejecting violence
– AMC did not move forward with the idea
Chandler Riggs once pitched a spinoff centered on Carl Grimes, set during the gap between Seasons 7 and 8 of The Walking Dead.
Carl’s death in Season 8 ended a major character’s story before the series finale. In Robert Kirkman’s comics, Carl survives and becomes central to the story after Rick’s death, leaving Riggs feeling there was more to explore on television.
Riggs’ proposed story would have focused on Carl’s changing views on violence. He wanted to show what happened during the month between seasons that helped move Carl from being prepared to kill to believing people could find a way to live together.
Riggs shared the idea with franchise creator Scott Gimple, but AMC did not pursue the spinoff. The actor later described filming Carl’s death as bittersweet.
