Lennie James has landed the lead role in Nightswimming, a new ITV thriller from the creators of Fleabag and The Missing.

James will play Matthew, a man who returns to his home in Portugal years after being convicted of murdering his family. The series will follow him as he investigates the killings and challenges the case that sent him to prison.

The story moves between the present and the events leading up to the murders. Matthew’s wife and two sons were attacked at their beachfront home while he was out swimming in the ocean.

As Matthew questions suspects, reconnects with old friends, and confronts those involved in the investigation, the series will revisit the night that changed his life. The mystery centers on who killed his family and why.

James said he was drawn to Matthew’s complexity and described the thriller as a story about family, loss, betrayal, redemption and justice.

Nightswimming was created by Jack and Harry Williams of Two Brothers Pictures, whose previous work includes Fleabag, The Widow and The Missing. Filming is expected to begin in Portugal next year. ITV has not announced a release date.
