Super Bowl exposure and Phoenix’s NBA All-Star Weekend shaped the date decision
Summary
– WWE discussed moving the 2027 Royal Rumble to February 20 for Super Bowl exposure
– Phoenix’s NBA All-Star Weekend and calendar changes helped rule out the later date
– WWE kept the event set for February 6 at State Farm Stadium
WWE considered moving the 2027 Royal Rumble back by two weeks to capitalize on Super Bowl coverage, but ultimately kept the event on February 6.
WrestleVotes Radio, via Fightful Select, reported that WWE held internal discussions about shifting the Premium Live Event to February 20. The proposal centered on the promotional opportunity surrounding ESPN’s first Super Bowl broadcast in 2027.
WWE reportedly believed ESPN’s coverage during Super Bowl week could help promote the Royal Rumble to a larger audience. With the event scheduled for the following weekend under the proposed plan, it could have received attention during both the lead-up and game-day coverage.
The later date would, however, have required changes to WWE’s calendar. Phoenix is also scheduled to host NBA All-Star Weekend from February 19 through February 21, creating a major scheduling conflict in the same market.
WWE decided the potential exposure did not outweigh those complications. The 40th annual Royal Rumble remains scheduled for February 6 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
