The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 Episode 5 opens with Maggie still shaken by the loss of her wedding ring as the island community faces an even more immediate crisis. With the pantry destroyed and months of rationing leaving residents frustrated, Renata struggles to maintain order as accusations of food theft spread throughout the community.
Maggie proposes giving residents something else to focus on by providing continuous electricity across the island. Doing that requires increasing the supply of walkers used for methane production, leading Maggie to suggest harvesting the enormous number of dead trapped inside the Empire State Building. Renata initially hesitates, but Maggie argues that restoring power could help prevent the growing food shortage from tearing the community apart.
Negan immediately understands the strategy, although he and Dillard initially refuse to participate because they have already expanded their food distribution operation. Renata eventually convinces them with the promise of Maggie’s tuna casserole, and the group begins assembling a task force for the dangerous mission.
Volunteers are promised double rations, scavenger rights, and increased respect for taking part. Maggie deliberately selects unpredictable residents, including Kelsey, Reverend Anthony, firefighter Benny, Chef Mesing, and actor Radomir, believing their willingness to take risks makes them useful for such a dangerous assignment.
The operation calls for the walkers to be diverted and funneled into waiting trucks in manageable groups. Solmari and Benny handle the diversion while Maggie, Negan, and Renata work closer to the building. Still, the mission nearly collapses when the zipline loosens and leaves Solmari dangerously close to the horde. Renata wants to abandon the plan to save her, while Negan argues that doing so would place everyone else at risk, and Solmari eventually reaches safety.
Hershel spends part of the episode helping Luis at the hospital, where Luis remains affected by the loss of Marisol. Hershel tells him that he still misses Glenn despite never truly knowing his father, and the two connect over the idea that the people they have lost remain part of them. Hershel later tries to comfort Luis by drawing Marisol on the hospital wall.
The successful walker mission leads to a celebration, giving viewers the Maggie and Negan drinking scene that had already generated attention from the season’s promotional footage. Maggie thanks Negan for helping, while he admits that the island is beginning to feel like home and tells her he believes she would make a better leader than Renata.
Their conversation becomes unusually playful as the two drink and joke together, but the mood changes when Negan suggests they might have been friends under different circumstances. Maggie’s reaction serves as an immediate reminder that their improving relationship cannot erase what happened to Glenn or the history that will always exist between them.
Trouble begins building elsewhere when Renata discovers that Fabian volunteered for additional armory duty so he could steal food. She forces him to publicly apologize the following day, believing accountability is necessary to maintain fairness, while Maggie appears uncomfortable with the humiliation.
Fabian later vents his anger at Negan, blaming Maggie for forcing the residents to leave the Bricks. Negan notices that Fabian is carrying a gun and initially attempts to redirect his anger toward Renata, but the conversation reveals that Fabian intends to kill Maggie.
Negan responds by taking Fabian’s gun and killing him despite Renata arriving and ordering him to stop. The shot also kills Dillard’s pet walker, Cockenspiel, escalating an already volatile situation before Renata declares that Negan is under arrest.
Episode 5 leaves the island facing several growing conflicts at once. Maggie and Negan are developing a more complicated level of trust, Renata’s authority is being tested, and Dillard’s increasingly strange attachment to the task force and his walkers continues to suggest that his role could become much more dangerous as the season progresses.
