The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 Episode 5, “Imperialis,” ended with Negan making another brutal decision after Fabian threatened Maggie.
Fabian entered Dillard’s bar, furious after being publicly exposed for stealing supplies, and blamed Maggie for his problems. Negan initially attempted to redirect his anger toward Renata, but everything changed once Fabian made it clear that he intended to go after Maggie.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan told Entertainment Weekly that the threat made Negan’s decision immediate. Morgan explained that Fabian might have escaped with only a bottle strike had he not targeted Maggie, but the character’s language and intentions pushed Negan beyond that point.
Renata arrived while Negan had Fabian at gunpoint and demanded that he stop, insisting that executions were not how her community operated. Negan rejected her authority and shot Fabian, then warned that anyone attempting to put him back inside a cage would face the same resistance.
Morgan said he had been eager to reach the scene while filming. Fabian actor Michael Emery was nervous while working through the sequence, while Morgan joked that he was itching to pull the gun and get to Negan’s confrontation with Renata.
Director Sylvain White also received praise from Morgan for the way the sequence was filmed. Morgan previously worked with White on The Boys and personally encouraged him to direct Dead City, believing that his approach to camera placement helped maximize the scene’s intensity.
Morgan views the killing as part of a larger theme surrounding Negan this season. His actions are partly driven by a desire to protect Maggie, but Morgan also sees rebellion against Renata’s system and elements of revenge influencing his increasingly aggressive behavior.
The scene further establishes how dramatically Maggie and Negan’s relationship has evolved. Morgan noted that their conversations are no longer built entirely around hostility, allowing the characters to communicate in ways they never could before while still carrying everything that happened between them.
That softer relationship does not mean Negan himself has become softer. Morgan said that maintaining the character’s unpredictability remains important to him, regardless of how much Negan has grown since his introduction.
Morgan also teased that Fabian’s death is only the beginning of the fallout. Viewers will see the confrontation continue, with Negan briefly losing control as his conflict with Renata escalates, threatening to create an even larger divide within the community.
