Norman Reedus is warning fans to prepare for more heartbreak when The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon returns for its fourth and final season.
During the October 9 New York Comic Con panel, Reedus said the upcoming chapter would get “way sadder,” according to an attendee’s account shared on social media. He followed the warning with a joke about sadness being familiar territory for The Walking Dead.
Reedus appeared alongside Melissa McBride, showrunner David Zabel, and franchise chief content officer Scott M. Gimple. Clarke Wolfe moderated the discussion at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.
AMC confirmed that the final season will premiere in February 2027 on AMC and AMC+. The panel also introduced new footage previewing Daryl and Carol’s next struggle to find their way home.
Their journey continues after the boat that offered their best chance of returning to the United States is destroyed. Stranded in Spain, the pair must navigate new dangers with that escape route gone.
Those threats include genetically altered walkers moving south from France, with faster and more aggressive variants complicating their efforts to survive.
Jimmy Smits joins the season as Captain Alejandro Perkins, a former U.S. Navy officer and doctor who has established a life amid the apocalypse. The cast also includes Romain Levi, Eduardo Noriega, Óscar Jaenada, Candela Saitta, Hugo Arbués, and Melina Matthews.
Although the series is ending, Gimple left open the possibility of another chapter involving Daryl. Asked about a reunion with Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes, he described it as “still a hope.”
Gimple said he believes the characters could eventually reunite and pointed to the emotional and narrative possibilities. His comments expressed interest rather than confirming a reunion project.
For now, the focus remains on Daryl and Carol’s final season together, with Reedus signaling that the road ahead will carry a considerable emotional cost.
Norman Reedus got a huge reaction at New York Comic Con after warning fans that the final season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon is going to get even sadder.
His response to the crowd? “What? It’s The Walking Dead of course it gets sadder.”
The fourth and final season premieres in February 2027 on AMC and AMC+.
