Jimmi Simpson’s run as Dillard has ended, but Dead City showrunner Seth Hoffman has not ruled out exploring more of the character’s story.
Dillard was introduced in the Season 3 premiere as a lonely survivor living in a bar with two walkers he believed could communicate with him. He initially became an ally of Negan before turning against him and attacking Maggie’s community.
Dillard’s storyline ended in the Season 3 finale when Maggie mortally wounded him. He was eventually left to turn into a walker, bringing his time in the series to an end.
Hoffman explained that Dillard was created as a one-season character. The shorter commitment also made it possible for the production to cast Simpson, who was available for the three-month schedule.
Although Dillard’s story was planned to end, Hoffman revealed that he already has an idea for a possible six-episode miniseries focused on the character before he met Negan.
Hoffman described the project as a fantasy idea rather than a confirmed production. He praised Simpson’s performance and said the creative team loved the character.
The finale also explored Dillard’s fractured state of mind. A sitcom-style sequence showed how he imagined conversations with his walkers, while a later mirror scene reflected his loss of identity.
Hoffman said those moments were part of the show’s effort to reveal more about Dillard before his death. The series has often given dying characters deeper emotional scenes, and Dillard received that same treatment.
There is currently no confirmed Dillard miniseries or Dead City Season 4. For now, the character’s story has ended, but Hoffman’s comments show that the creative team still sees potential in Dillard’s past.
