The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 brings Maggie and Negan into a new stage of their complicated relationship.
Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan discussed the shift in a behind-the-scenes feature focused on whether the longtime enemies are becoming friends or remain foes.
Morgan recalled that Cohan could barely look at him during his first years on The Walking Dead because of the emotional weight surrounding their characters. Cohan jokingly responded that she may simply not have been wearing her glasses.
Their dynamic remained serious when they began working together on Dead City. Morgan said nearly every scene in the early seasons of the spinoff carried a heavy tone, with little room for humor or lightness.
Both actors described themselves as naturally silly people working inside an extremely dark fictional world. Season 3 finally gives them more opportunities to bring some of that lighter energy to the camera.
The new season also places Maggie and Negan in situations where they must cooperate. One major sequence has the pair captured and restrained together after other survivors identify Negan as the Croat’s second-in-command.
Cohan explained that viewers rarely see Maggie or Negan under another person’s control. Although they continue arguing with each other, being zip-tied together allows them to unite against a shared enemy.
The behind-the-scenes feature also examined a walker fight that takes place after Maggie and Negan tumble through an open cellar door. The sequence was still being developed near production and had changed significantly from its original concept.
The scene was initially planned as a street fight amid dust. That version was abandoned because Morgan was dealing with an eye infection while Cohan had a nose infection, making the dusty environment difficult for both performers.
The finished sequence placed them inside the cellar, where they fought walkers while still restrained. Cohan and Morgan said it marked the first time Maggie and Negan had truly fought side by side since approximately Season 11 of The Walking Dead.
Their cooperation becomes more personal when Maggie asks Negan to help the group. She first tells him that they need additional numbers before directly admitting that she needs him.
Cohan said Maggie’s decision is motivated by her desire to create a different life for herself and Hershel. Moving forward requires her to imagine a future that is not completely controlled by anger.
Morgan suggested that the possibilities created by Maggie and Negan’s changing relationship are significant. Even with their growing cooperation, the actors made it clear that the tension between them has not disappeared.
Their playful exchange at the end of the feature captured that uncertainty. Negan joked that he should stab Maggie, while she doubted he would actually do it, and he insisted he might have stabbed her at least a little.
