More recently, Daryl Dixon, Dead City, and The Ones Who Live have carried the universe forward by continuing the stories of major characters from the original show.
That uninterrupted run appeared to be in danger after AMC confirmed that Daryl Dixon would end with its fourth season.
Dead City season three is airing this summer, but the series has not yet been renewed for a fourth season. With Daryl Dixon originally expected to return in 2026, AMC faced a 2027 schedule without any new Walking Dead episodes.
Moving Daryl Dixon’s final season to 2027 solves that immediate problem and extends the franchise’s television streak into another year.
Norman Reedus first revealed the change in a social media post shortly before AMC confirmed the news during the Dead City season three panel at San Diego Comic-Con.
Although the delay means fans must wait longer to see Daryl and Carol’s final chapter, the season has already completed production. Filming wrapped in Spain at the end of 2025, making the schedule change easier than producing another season of Dead City in time for the change.
The delay also gives AMC and Walking Dead Universe Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple more time to determine the franchise’s next direction.
Questions about its future have increased as the current generation of sequel series approaches its conclusion. The Ones Who Live ended after its planned single season, while Daryl Dixon is preparing for its final chapter.
Despite that uncertainty, AMC Studios President Dan McDermott has said The Walking Dead will always maintain a presence across the company’s platforms.
Delaying Daryl Dixon season four does not reveal what will follow the current spinoffs, but it guarantees that fans will have another year with the franchise while AMC develops its long-term plans.
