The Dead City finale changed their relationship without erasing the past

Maggie made a major decision about Negan during the Season 3 finale of The Walking Dead: Dead City.
Negan offered to surrender himself to Dillard to protect Maggie, Hershel and their Manhattan community. Maggie refused to let him sacrifice himself and acknowledged how closely their lives have become connected.
Maggie made it clear that she will never forgive Negan for killing Glenn. However, she also admitted that they have moved beyond the same anger that defined their relationship for years.
Lauren Cohan told PEOPLE that remaining consumed by resentment was hurting Maggie more than anyone else. She believes Glenn would not have wanted Maggie to remain trapped in that pain.
That anger also damaged Maggie’s relationship with Hershel. Season 2 showed that her obsession with Negan had prevented her from being fully present for their son.
Maggie’s decision was also influenced by the pain Negan experienced following Ginny’s death. Cohan explained that Maggie’s compassionate side did not want him trapped in the lowest version of himself.
Keeping Negan alive also served a practical purpose. Maggie previously warned that killing him could mark the beginning of the end for the community they had helped build.
Cohan hopes Maggie can continue to reconnect with the more hopeful person she was in the early seasons of The Walking Dead. She wants the character to find joy, build new relationships and believe in the future again.
Maggie once wanted Rick Grimes to kill Negan and was furious when he chose imprisonment instead. Cohan understands why Maggie wanted immediate revenge at the time but believes killing Negan now would have hardened her further.
The finale did not erase Glenn’s death or give Negan Maggie’s forgiveness. It showed that Maggie is finally ready to stop allowing resentment to control her life.
AMC has not renewed The Walking Dead: Dead City for a fourth season. Cohan confirmed that the creative team already has several unexpected ideas if the series continues.
