Zilla Fatu made a major statement before his first official NXT match, attacking his three Heatwave opponents and ending the August 25 episode of NXT holding the championship.
The closing summit initially centered on NXT Women’s Champion Kendal Grey and Kelani Jordan. Grey responded to Jordan’s recent criticism, making it clear she was prepared to defend her championship, while Jordan promised to take the title from her.
Wren Sinclair, ZARIA and Kali Armstrong eventually joined the confrontation ahead of their Winner Takes All match at Heatwave. Armstrong had defeated ZARIA earlier in the night to secure her place in the three-way championship match officially.
Grayson Waller then interrupted and shifted the attention toward the NXT Championship picture. Waller declared that Heatwave would be his opportunity to overcome his past and become champion before Tony D’Angelo arrived and dismissed his chances.
Cruz Montana appeared from the crowd soon afterward and announced that he was ready to fight. The confrontation quickly erupted into a large brawl involving the competitors gathered around the ring.
Once the chaos involving the women had settled, Fatu stormed into the scene and launched himself from the ring post onto D’Angelo, Waller, and Montana. The attack left all three of his Heatwave opponents down.
Fatu then grabbed the NXT Championship, entered the ring, and raised the title as the show went off the air. The closing image gave him significant momentum heading into the biggest match of his young NXT run.
Heatwave on August 30 will feature D’Angelo defending the NXT Championship against Fatu, Waller, and Montana in a Fatal Four-Way match. For Fatu, the championship bout will also serve as his first official NXT match.
