The weeklong protest targets Sony’s physical media plans
Summary
– PS5 players have begun a coordinated worldwide blackout protest against Sony
– Organizers want consoles unplugged through at least August 30
– The campaign is focused largely on Sony’s planned move away from physical discs
PlayStation 5 owners around the world have started unplugging their consoles as part of an organized protest to get Sony’s attention.
The blackout was scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. local time on August 23, although some participants began taking part earlier. Organizers are encouraging players to keep their PS5 consoles unplugged through at least August 30, meaning no gaming, account logins, or PlayStation Store purchases during that period.
The goal is to reduce Sony’s monthly active user numbers, one of the performance metrics the company tracks closely. Protesters hope a noticeable decline in activity could demonstrate dissatisfaction among portions of the PlayStation community.
Much of the anger centers on Sony’s reported plan to stop manufacturing physical game discs in January 2028. Organizers have also argued that the company has become increasingly disconnected from its fan base, expanding the protest beyond the physical media issue alone.
Concerns about PlayStation leadership have also grown among some enthusiasts. A recent Push Square poll found that 92 percent of respondents believed PlayStation Studios would benefit from new management, following reports of development changes involving projects such as Horizon Hunters Gathering.
Sony reported approximately 125 million monthly active PlayStation users during its most recent financial update, representing year-over-year growth. That means the blackout would likely need significant participation before producing a clearly visible change in the company’s overall numbers.
Sony has previously downplayed the effect of backlash surrounding physical media and PlayStation Plus cancellations. CFO Lin Tao told investors that the company had not seen an impact on its business from those concerns.
The organized blackout now gives frustrated PS5 owners a coordinated opportunity to make their dissatisfaction visible. Whether enough players participate to affect Sony’s engagement numbers remains to be seen, but the campaign is scheduled to continue through at least August 30.
