Jeffrey Dean Morgan continues to face real-world backlash over Negan’s actions on The Walking Dead.
Negan became one of television’s most infamous villains after murdering Abraham Ford and Glenn Rhee at the beginning of Season 7.
Although the character has since evolved into an antihero on The Walking Dead: Dead City, some viewers still associate Morgan with the brutal scene.
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Morgan revealed that angry fans continue confronting him over Glenn’s death.
“I still get hate,” Morgan said. “I get people all the time that are just furious with the fact that I killed Glenn.”
Morgan was surprised by the reaction because Glenn had already suffered the same fate in Robert Kirkman’s comic book series.
However, he acknowledged that Glenn’s popularity led many viewers to direct their anger at both Negan and the actor who played him.
Morgan recalled one particularly intense encounter while visiting a Georgia coffee shop with Norman Reedus.
An older woman who recognized the actors struck Morgan with her purse and began swearing at him.
The situation became serious enough that Reedus told Morgan they needed to leave.
Morgan said people still yell at him and make offensive gestures when he walks through New York.
After dealing with the reactions for nearly a decade, he now considers them a humorous part of playing Negan.
Morgan believes the character is more complicated than a traditional villain because nearly everyone in The Walking Dead’s apocalyptic world has killed someone.
However, he understands why viewers despised Negan after he attacked the show’s heroes and killed two beloved characters.
Morgan admitted that he once strongly defended Negan but no longer feels compelled to change anyone’s opinion.
“I used to really defend Negan,” he said. “And now I’m just like, hey, whatever.”
Morgan currently stars alongside Lauren Cohan in the third season of The Walking Dead: Dead City.
