Older physical games can still receive new disc prints after 2028
Summary
– Sony will still allow new PS5 disc reorders for older games that already had physical releases
– New PlayStation games released after January 2028 will no longer receive traditional physical disc production
– Sony may offer retail versions of new games through digital codes instead of discs
Sony’s future PlayStation disc policy now has a key clarification for publishers and developers.
The company previously announced that it will stop producing physical game discs for all new PlayStation releases starting in January 2028. That move raised major questions about what would happen to existing PS5 games already available on disc.
According to a partner message seen by Game File, publishers and developers will still be able to place reorders for existing PlayStation disc games after the cutoff date.
That means older titles with prior physical releases can still receive new disc prints. The restriction applies to brand-new games released after Sony’s January 2028 deadline.
Sony also told partners that the disc ordering process will change, though the company has not yet shared the full details.
For new retail releases, Sony said publishers will be able to use digital codes instead. More information on that process is expected later.
The clarification keeps part of the physical market alive, but it does not fully ease concerns from collectors and players who prefer discs. New PlayStation releases after 2028 may still move away from traditional physical ownership.
For now, existing PS5 disc games are not being fully cut off. The bigger shift is that future PlayStation retail shelves may rely more on code-in-a-box releases than real discs.
