Sony opens Bungie’s shooter to all players without PS Plus
Summary
– PS5 players can try Marathon for free from June 2 through June 9
– A PS Plus subscription is not required during the Open Play Week
– Progress made during the free period will carry into Marathon Season 2
Sony is giving PS5 players a clear chance to test Marathon without paying for the game or needing PlayStation Plus.
The Bungie shooter will be free to play from June 2 through June 9 as part of Sony’s Open Play Week. The full game will be available during that window, giving curious players a chance to try the multiplayer title before deciding whether to stick with it.
Marathon arrived in March 2026 with positive reviews, but its early commercial momentum has not matched the critical response. Sony is now giving the game a stronger push by removing the entry fee for one week.
The free period also lines up with the launch of Marathon Season 2 on June 2. Any progress made during Open Play Week will carry over, which gives new players a reason to invest time without feeling like their run is temporary.
Marathon brings back Bungie’s classic sci-fi shooter name with a modern multiplayer setup. Players enter Tau Ceti IV, a dangerous colony filled with rival Runners, security forces, harsh environments, and valuable loot.
The game is built around tense exploration and fast PvP fights. Players can enter alone or with a crew, gather supplies, and try to escape with what they find before another squad takes them out.
Sony and Bungie are clearly looking for a fresh spark. A free week gives Marathon a better shot at reaching players who may have skipped it at launch.
