Doom: The Dark Ages is getting a visual upgrade for PlayStation 5 Pro players.

Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed that Free Update 4 will add the upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution to Doom: The Dark Ages on July 7. The update arrives alongside Doom: The Dark Ages | Revelations.

PSSR uses machine learning reconstruction to create a sharper image from the frame rendered by idTech8. It uses motion, depth, exposure, and sub-pixel data to help keep the final image clearer during movement.

That matters for a game like Doom. Players are constantly sprinting, turning, parrying, using the Shield Saw, and fighting through heavy effects. Fast action can make small visual details shimmer or blur, especially when a screen is packed with enemies, particles, and thin geometry.

The upgraded PSSR is built to help those details hold together more consistently. Snow patterns, broken stone, chains, sparks, weapon edges, distant enemies, and jagged environments should appear more stable during combat.

Sony said the goal is not just sharper screenshots. The real benefit comes during motion, where the image should stay cleaner while players move through large arenas and effects-heavy battles.

idTech8 already focuses on responsive gameplay, high-frame-rate action, large battlefields, dynamic lighting, rich materials, and heavy particle effects. Adding PSSR gives the engine another way to preserve detail while still keeping Doom’s speed intact.

The difference should be easier to notice during wide combat scenes. Distant enemies and environmental edges should be easier to read, while close-up weapons and characters should look more resolved.

For PS5 Pro players, the update delivers a cleaner presentation for Doom: The Dark Ages without altering the core gameplay. Doom: The Dark Ages | Revelations launches July 7 on PlayStation 5, with upgraded PSSR support exclusive to PlayStation 5 Pro.
