The Walking Dead: Dead City returns for Season 3 on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at 9/8c on AMC and AMC+. Season 2 ended with Maggie, Negan, and Perlie Armstrong facing a new threat after surviving another violent struggle in Manhattan.

Season 2 followed New Babylon’s effort to take control of Manhattan’s methane supply. Maggie returned to the city as part of the expedition while trying to protect Hershel and repair their damaged relationship.

Negan had been forced back into a leadership role with the Burazi. The Dama wanted him to become the feared leader he had once been, even though Negan repeatedly showed that he did not want to return to that life.

Maggie’s conflict with Negan remained central to her relationship with Hershel. Hershel believed his mother’s inability to move beyond Glenn’s murder had continued to control their family.

The Dama unexpectedly returned after appearing to die in a fire. The series confirmed that she had survived, but the circumstances surrounding her escape were not fully explained during the finale.

The Dama told Maggie that killing Negan would allow her and Hershel to move forward. Hershel supported that demand and asked his mother to finally end the life of the man who killed his father.

Maggie promised Hershel that she would kill Negan. She then left to find him as Negan prepared for a confrontation with Bruegel and his followers.

Bruegel arrived with Armstrong and his fighters. Negan had set a trap that turned the meeting into a bloody battle, with gunfire, flames, and walkers.

Bruegel’s side suffered heavy losses during the fight. Negan eventually captured Bruegel and Armstrong and forced both men onto their knees.

Negan then recreated the lineup that once ended with the deaths of Abraham and Glenn. He used his selection rhyme while carrying his new version of Lucille.

The bat landed on Armstrong, but Negan chose Bruegel instead. He filled Bruegel with methane, set him on fire, and finished the execution with Lucille.

Negan then prepared to kill Armstrong because he feared that Armstrong could endanger Ginny. Maggie arrived and stabbed Negan in the back before he could strike.

Maggie followed the injured Negan while carrying Lucille. She appeared ready to fulfill her promise to Hershel and kill the man responsible for Glenn’s death.

Negan was trying to reach Ginny rather than escape from Maggie. They found that Ginny had already died from her infected wound and was reanimated.

Maggie stopped before killing Negan. She handed him her knife and allowed him to put Ginny down himself.

Ginny’s death became the turning point of the finale. Maggie had reached the moment when she could finally kill Negan, but she chose not to complete the act.

Maggie and Armstrong helped Negan reach an apartment after the confrontation. Armstrong treated Negan’s wound while the three survivors considered what would come next.

Maggie later returned to Hershel and admitted that she had not killed Negan. Hershel refused to leave with her and remained beside the Dama.

Maggie did not force Hershel to return. She told him she would remain nearby, leaving their relationship unresolved as Season 3 began.

More New Babylon forces were shown marching through Manhattan as the season came to an end. Their arrival created another major threat for everyone still living on the island.

Maggie, Negan, and Armstrong ended the season together inside the apartment. Armstrong began speaking about finding a better way forward before Maggie and Negan continued the message.

They agreed that moving forward required them to work through what had happened rather than ignore it. Their agreement marked a change in Maggie and Negan’s relationship, but it did not erase their history or turn them into friends.

Executive producer Scott M. Gimple described their new position as a détente. Maggie had chosen not to kill Negan, while Negan had survived being pushed back toward the violent identity he no longer wanted.

Season 3 begins with Maggie separated from Hershel, the Dama still influencing him, and New Babylon expanding its presence in Manhattan.

Negan must also live with Ginny’s death and the violent choices he made after returning to power. Armstrong now stands beside Maggie and Negan after breaking from the mission that originally brought him back to the city.

Season 2 left Maggie and Negan at a clear turning point. They cannot undo the past, but they have agreed that surviving what comes next will require them to move forward together.
