The Walking Dead: Dead City took Maggie and Negan somewhere completely different in Season 3, Episode 6, by imagining a world where the zombie apocalypse never happened.
A new behind-the-scenes look explains that the episode grew from Negan’s belief that he and Maggie might have been friends in another life. The creative team decided to take that idea literally and explore what their relationship could have looked like without Glenn’s death defining their first connection.
Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan described filming the episode as surreal because they remained Maggie and Negan while stepping into dramatically different versions of their lives.
Instead of meeting through violence and trauma, Maggie and Negan encounter each other as strangers in New York City. Their conversations quickly reveal an unexplained familiarity and connection despite neither character knowing the history they share elsewhere.
The writers revealed that Before Sunrise was a major inspiration for the episode. The concept centered on bringing two people together for roughly a day in New York and letting their conversations and chemistry shape where the story went.
That shift also changed the type of tension normally associated with The Walking Dead. Rather than fearing walkers or any other deadly enemy, the creative team joked that the episode’s horror stemmed from viewers wondering whether Maggie and Negan might actually become romantically involved.
The alternate reality also created an opportunity to bring Emily Kinney back as Beth Greene.
Cohan recalled being thrilled when she learned Beth would return, while Kinney said it felt good to work with Cohan again and reconnect with people who had been part of the original Walking Dead production.
Beth’s appearance reverses one of the original series’ most painful losses. Her last appearance during Season 5 ended with her being shot just before she could properly reunite with Maggie.
Dead City instead imagined Beth growing into adulthood and becoming a singer, something the creative team felt was a natural progression for the character.
That decision also allowed Kinney and Cohan to sing together during the episode, paying tribute to the sisters’ musical moments from the original series.
Despite taking place in another reality, the episode was still designed to say something about the Maggie and Negan viewers currently know.
The creative team explained that their unlikely partnership appears to keep both characters from making some of their worst decisions. Even after everything between them, there remains something about their connection that continues pulling them into each other’s lives.
That parallel becomes clear when the episode abruptly returns to the main timeline, and Maggie learns that Negan has killed Fabian and attacked Dillard.
The alternate universe may never have actually happened. Still, Dead City used it to explore the possibility that Maggie and Negan might have found each other under completely different circumstances anyway.
