Improved PSSR debuts alongside Capcom’s latest release
Summary
– Sony launches upgraded PSSR upscaling tech for PS5 Pro
– Resident Evil Requiem is the first game to use the new system
– Wider rollout coming in March via system-level update
Sony has officially launched a significant upgrade for PlayStation 5 Pro, introducing an enhanced version of its PSSR upscaling technology. The update arrives today and makes its debut in Resident Evil Requiem.
PSSR, short for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, is Sony’s machine-learning upscaling solution that boosts image clarity while maintaining performance. The new version is built on AMD’s FSR4 technology and developed through the ongoing Project Amethyst collaboration between Sony and AMD.
According to PlayStation system architect Mark Cerny, the updated PSSR features a redesigned neural network and a revised algorithm. He confirmed that Resident Evil Requiem is the first title to implement this advanced version, aiming to improve both frame rate stability and visual sharpness.
Cerny also noted that more games will adopt the improved PSSR in March. A system software update will introduce an “Enhance PSSR Image Quality” toggle in PS5 Pro settings, allowing players to apply the new upscaling to supported titles.
Digital Foundry has already analyzed the updated technology in Resident Evil Requiem and described the results as a major improvement. In ray tracing mode, the game reportedly upscales from a base resolution slightly above 1080p to 4 K while delivering sharper detail and improved edge clarity at 60 frames per second. Minor visual noise persists in certain scenes, but analysts attribute it to Capcom’s denoising solution rather than the PSSR upgrade.
The PlayStation 5 Pro launched initially in 2024 with over 50 enhanced titles, though some early adopters raised concerns about visual inconsistencies in certain games. This latest revision appears aimed at refining performance and fulfilling the console’s graphical promises.
Sony plans to share further details in March as additional titles receive compatibility updates.
