Sony’s console tops the monthly hardware chart as Switch 2 finishes close behind

PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console worldwide in July 2026, according to the latest hardware estimates from VGChartz.
Sony’s console sold an estimated 784,102 units during the month, bringing its lifetime total to approximately 94.09 million units. Nintendo Switch 2 followed closely behind with 707,158 units sold, increasing its estimated lifetime total to 22.55 million units.
Nintendo Switch finished third with 147,223 units sold worldwide, while Xbox Series X|S placed fourth with an estimated 115,442 units. Lifetime sales are estimated at 155.32 million units for the original Switch and 35.21 million units for Xbox Series X|S.
Compared with PlayStation 4 during the same stage of its lifecycle, PS5 performed strongly. PlayStation 4 sold 722,877 units in July 2019, meaning PS5 was ahead by more than 61,000 units during the comparable month.
Xbox Series X|S continued to trail the performance of Xbox One at the same point in its lifecycle. Xbox One sold 246,804 units during July 2019, more than 131,000 units above the estimated Xbox Series X|S total for July 2026.
Nintendo Switch 2 also finished below the original Switch when comparing similar months in their lifecycles. Switch sold 809,477 units in July 2018, putting Switch 2 more than 102,000 units behind that figure.
Regionally, Switch 2 led the Americas with 267,201 units sold, followed by PS5 at 215,347 units. PS5 finished first in Europe with 301,537 units, while Switch 2 followed with 192,896 units.
PS5 also led Asia with an estimated 235,866 units compared with 215,895 units for Switch 2. Oceania was extremely close, with PS5 selling 31,352 units and Switch 2 reaching 31,166 units.
Looking at 2026 year-to-date estimates, Nintendo Switch 2 remains ahead with 6.96 million units sold. PS5 follows with 4.66 million units, while Nintendo Switch has reached 1.43 million units, and Xbox Series X|S sits at 980,000 units.
VGChartz notes that its hardware figures are estimates based on retail sampling, regional trends, and sell-through data. The company regularly adjusts its figures when additional manufacturer and regional tracking information becomes available.
