Norman Reedus nearly missed out on The Walking Dead because his agent did not believe in the zombie drama at first.
During an October 25, 2025, interview with TelevisionAcademy.com, Reedus looked back on the early days of the AMC series as the franchise marked its 15th anniversary.
Reedus said he was mainly working in movies when he received the pilot script during pilot season. His agent pushed back on the project because of the zombie concept, but Reedus felt The Walking Dead was the strongest script he had received.
He originally auditioned for the role of Merle Dixon, but Michael Rooker was cast. Frank Darabont liked Reedus’ audition enough to create a new character for him, which became Daryl Dixon.
That decision changed the future of The Walking Dead. Daryl became one of the franchise’s most popular characters and later received his own spinoff, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.
Reedus also revealed that Daryl was once planned to lose an arm. He even helped design a prosthetic that would allow Daryl to continue using a crossbow and riding a motorcycle. AMC ultimately rejected the idea, and a similar injury was later given to Aaron.
The actor pointed to Merle’s death as Daryl’s biggest turning point. Reedus said he pushed for Daryl to grow in the opposite direction of Merle, making the character more loyal, honest, and protective.
Reedus also reflected on memorable action scenes, including Daryl’s rocket-launcher moment, his fight with Beta, and years of physical work that helped define the character.
He also praised Melissa McBride’s return as Carol in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, saying she has been his close friend since the beginning of the franchise.
