The actor says a strong idea exists for Jack Bauer’s next chapter
Summary
– Kiefer Sutherland says a promising idea is being developed for another 24 story
– The actor wants to return as Jack Bauer before the character becomes too old for action
– A revival still needs approval from the companies that control the franchise
Kiefer Sutherland has offered fans a hopeful update on the possibility of returning as Jack Bauer in a new 24 project.
While speaking during a Young Guns panel at FanX Salt Lake, Sutherland discussed the chances of continuing the hit action series. He explained that the biggest obstacle is not a rights dispute, but whether the companies controlling 24 want to move forward.
Sutherland praised longtime executive producer Howard Gordon and co-creator Joel Surnow before revealing that he believes a strong story idea is already in place.
The actor said he misses playing Jack Bauer and misses making a show that connected with so many viewers. He also made it clear that he wants any return to happen while Bauer can still be portrayed as a capable action hero.
Sutherland joked that fans do not want to see an older, weakened version of Jack Bauer. His comments suggest he understands that a revival would need to respect the character’s legacy while moving the story forward.
The latest update follows Sutherland’s previous comments about Gordon developing written material for a potential revival. He previously described the idea as strong and said he wanted to complete Jack Bauer’s story.
The main challenge remains corporate approval. 24 originally aired through Fox, but ownership changes involving Disney and 20th Television added more steps before a new project could receive the green light.
Jack Bauer’s last major appearance came in 24: Live Another Day. That series ended with Bauer surrendering to Russian authorities, leaving his future unresolved.
A 24 movie was also reported to be in early development at 20th Century Studios, although there was no confirmation that Sutherland would return for that project.
Nothing has been officially ordered, and the revival does not have a release date. However, Sutherland’s latest comments suggest the idea remains active and that he is still interested in stepping back into Bauer’s shoes.
For fans, the biggest takeaway is simple. Sutherland still misses Jack Bauer, believes there is a worthwhile story to tell, and hopes the character can return before too much time passes.
