According to Alvarez, wrestlers who do not progress at the level WWE wants can quickly find themselves at risk of being released.
Alvarez said Troy was one of the talents WWE determined had not improved enough over the previous six months. He also stressed that the situation is influenced by the sheer number of wrestlers currently signed and training at the Performance Center.
With so many developmental prospects competing for limited roster space, Alvarez described the process as a numbers game. He made it clear that WWE’s decision does not necessarily mean Troy cannot succeed elsewhere, only that the company felt his progress was not strong enough to justify keeping him.
The release may also have been decided before it became public on September 4. Alvarez said he was given the impression that WWE had made the call earlier, with Troy’s departure only becoming official later.
That timeline adds context to Troy’s cryptic “30 days” message on social media, which he posted and pinned shortly before his release was confirmed.
There had already been signs that Troy’s NXT run had stalled. His last televised match came against Dion Lennox on June 9, leaving him off NXT television for nearly three months before WWE let him go.
Despite that absence, Troy had recently made it clear that he still believed strongly in his future. He said he had plenty to prove and was determined to become the performer he believed he could be.
Now, that opportunity will have to come outside WWE.
Troy’s release appears to be another example of how competitive the NXT system has become. With evaluations taking place every six months and a crowded Performance Center roster, WWE is continuing to make difficult decisions based on how quickly developmental talent progresses.
