Summary
– Emily Kinney will return as Beth Greene for a guest appearance in Dead City Season 3
– Beth appears during an alternate-reality episode rather than returning from the dead
– The first footage reunites Kinney with Lauren Cohan more than a decade after Beth’s death
Emily Kinney is officially returning to The Walking Dead universe as Beth Greene.
Lauren Cohan announced the surprise during The Walking Dead: Dead City panel at San Diego Comic-Con.
Kinney will guest star during an alternate-reality episode in the show’s third season.
The storyline does not reverse Beth’s death from the original series.
Instead, the episode will explore a different reality where Maggie’s younger sister is still alive.
Entertainment Weekly shared the first photos and behind-the-scenes footage from Kinney’s return.
The images show Kinney and Cohan filming together near Bethesda Fountain in New York City’s Central Park.
Kinney can also be seen carrying a guitar case, suggesting that Beth’s musical side will remain part of the character.
Cohan introduced Kinney during a break in filming and expressed her appreciation that Kinney had agreed to return.
Kinney said she never expected to receive another opportunity to portray Beth and was happy to reunite with Cohan.
Cohan warned viewers to prepare their tissues, suggesting the episode will feature an emotional reunion between the sisters.
Beth was killed in the midseason finale of The Walking Dead Season 5.
Former police officer Dawn Lerner accidentally shot Beth after she stabbed her with a pair of scissors during a confrontation at Grady Memorial Hospital.
The death became one of the original series’ most shocking moments and deeply affected Maggie and the rest of Beth’s family.
Kinney later admitted that filming and discussing the episode had been emotionally difficult.
Her Dead City appearance will give fans another chance to see Beth while allowing the series to explore a version of Maggie’s life that never existed in the main timeline.
