Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 3 finale.

Maggie and Negan ended the third season of The Walking Dead: Dead City as allies, but showrunner Seth Hoffman does not believe their conflicts are over.

The Season 3 finale saw Maggie appoint Negan as Head of Security for her growing Manhattan community. The decision marked a major change nearly a decade after Negan killed Glenn.

Hoffman told CBR that both characters now have something they want to protect. Maggie and Negan share the goal of helping the community succeed, even if they are not friends.

That common purpose would not guarantee a peaceful partnership. Hoffman believes Maggie and Negan would have different ideas about what the community should become and how its people should move forward.

Those disagreements could create the central conflict for a possible fourth season. Instead of continuing to focus on Glenn’s death, the story could place Maggie and Negan on opposing sides of decisions affecting the community.

The shift would allow their complicated history to remain important without recurring as a source of tension. They may trust each other enough to work together while still strongly disagreeing about leadership and survival.

AMC has not renewed The Walking Dead: Dead City for Season 4. However, Lauren Cohan previously confirmed that the creative team has discussed several unexpected ideas for continuing the story.

The third season also provided a possible conclusion by showing Maggie choosing to live beyond the grief and resentment that controlled much of her life.

If the series returns, Maggie and Negan would enter a new stage of their relationship. Their conflict would no longer be built entirely around the past but around their competing visions for the future.
