PS5 Emulator Project Reaches Early Milestone

SharpEmu could eventually bring more current-generation PlayStation games to PC

Summary

– A new experimental PS5 emulator called SharpEmu is now in development

– Early tests include Dreaming Sarah, Silent Hill: The Short Message, Poppy Playtime Chapter 1, and Demon’s Souls

– Demon’s Souls has reached its first video frame, but full gameplay is still far away

A new PS5 emulator is officially in the works, and it could eventually change how current-generation PlayStation games reach PC.

The project is called SharpEmu, and it is being developed as an experimental emulator focused on PS5 games. While it is still very early, the team has already started testing several titles.

Those early tests include Dreaming Sarah, Silent Hill: The Short Message, Poppy Playtime Chapter 1, and the Demon’s Souls remake. Some games still crash at startup, but the project has already shown real progress.

Dreaming Sarah has reached real 2D texture rendering. Demon’s Souls has also taken an important step forward by reaching its first video frame and entering a continuous video loop.

Developer par274 explained that Demon’s Souls appears to keep running in the background without crashing. The issue is that image output is not fully working yet because the shader translation and rendering pipeline still need more work.

“The game seems to continue streaming without any crash in the background, but we don’t get any image output yet because the AGC shader translation and rendering pipeline aren’t complete.”

That may not sound like much to casual players, but in emulation, early breakthroughs can move quickly. Bloodborne is a good example of how quickly progress can happen once a project begins to cross major technical hurdles.

Bloodborne’s PS4 emulation progress moved from basic menu access in July 2024 to a playable version of Central Yharnam one month later. By early September, the game could be played in full, though community fixes were still needed for missing textures and other issues.

Over time, Bloodborne improved even further on PC through emulation. It eventually reached native 4K and unlocked 60fps, giving players options that were never available in the original PS4 release.

Demon’s Souls could follow a similar path if SharpEmu keeps advancing. That does not mean PS5 emulation is close to becoming easy or stable, but it does show that the door is starting to open.

This also matters because Sony has recently signaled a pullback from traditional PC ports. The company is expected to focus more on cross-platform live-service releases while keeping major single-player titles on PlayStation hardware.

That could make emulation even more important for PC players who want access to PS5 exclusives. Still, expectations should stay realistic.

A working PS5 emulator does not mean GTA VI will run on PC through emulation at launch. It also does not mean demanding current-generation titles will suddenly become playable on average gaming PCs.

Even PS4 emulation can be difficult on strong hardware, and PS5 emulation has far more work ahead. SharpEmu is still at an experimental stage, not a consumer-ready solution.

There is also the question of whether Sony will try to stop the project. However, emulator development can be legally protected when developers avoid stolen proprietary code and do not distribute pirated games.

That is an important distinction. Projects can run into legal trouble when they bypass encryption systems or include copyrighted material, but building an emulator through reverse engineering is a different matter.

SharpEmu’s developer has stated that there are no commercial goals tied to the project and that the team is interested in system architecture and reverse engineering.

Sony probably will not be thrilled to see a PS5 emulator taking shape. Still, SharpEmu has already given PC players something worth watching.

The project is nowhere near replacing official ports, but it is now real enough to make the future of PS5 emulation feel a lot less theoretical.
