The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 may bring back some familiar faces who have not been seen in years.
Showrunner Seth Hoffman revealed that the upcoming season will feature returning characters in an alternate-reality episode. The episode will imagine a world where the zombie apocalypse never happened.
Speaking at the Festival de Television de Monte-Carlo, Hoffman said he wanted to approach the idea from a fan’s point of view. He felt longtime viewers would want to see characters who have been away from the franchise for a long time.
“I hope I can look at it from a fan’s perspective and I thought, ‘One thing that fans would want to see in this spin-off is characters that maybe we haven’t seen for a long time’.”
Hoffman said the alternate reality concept gives the show a natural way to bring back people who have not been part of The Walking Dead universe recently.
“If you were to do an alternate reality episode where the apocalypse never happened, you could invite back some characters that haven’t been part of the franchise in a long time.”
He did not reveal which characters will appear. Hoffman said some dedicated fans may already have guesses, but he could not confirm or deny any names.
The episode will also focus heavily on Maggie Rhee and Negan. Hoffman said the idea allows viewers to see who they might have become if the world had never fallen apart.
That question is especially important because both characters have been shaped by trauma, violence, loss, and survival. The episode asks whether Maggie and Negan are better or worse because of everything they endured.
“As I began to think about the episode more, the value from a series-wide perspective is that you get to see who Maggie and Negan would have been if the apocalypse didn’t happen.”
Jeffrey Dean Morgan also praised the new season, calling it the show’s best so far. He said season 3 moves Maggie and Negan toward a more positive future.
Morgan added that Negan continues to add new layers over the years in the franchise. The shift in his relationship with Maggie will show another side of him.
Lauren Cohan said Maggie will also be explored in a different way this season. She noted that grief has defined much of Maggie’s story, but season 3 uses shared trauma to help the characters keep going.
Dead City season 3 is now shaping up to be more than another fight for Manhattan. With surprise returns, an alternate reality twist, and a deeper look at Maggie and Negan, the next chapter could give longtime Walking Dead fans plenty to talk about.
