AMC series brings zombie drama to Manhattan for rare NYC shoot

Summary

– The Walking Dead: Dead City will film scenes on the Upper East Side on January 15

– East 72nd Street will be used for a rare Manhattan-based production

– The series is currently filming its third season for AMC

The Walking Dead: Dead City is set to bring its post-apocalyptic world to the Upper East Side as AMC prepares to film scenes in Manhattan. Production notices confirm that filming will take place on East 72nd Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenues, on Wednesday, January 15.

The shoot marks an uncommon moment for the series, which is set in a ruined New York City but has largely avoided filming in Manhattan. Previous seasons relied on locations in New Jersey and Massachusetts to recreate the city.

Dead City follows Maggie Rhee and Negan Smith as they navigate a zombie-infested Manhattan that has been cut off from the mainland. The setting plays a central role in the series, highlighting isolation, danger, and survival.

Season one was filmed across New Jersey, including Newark, Hoboken Terminal, and Liberty State Park. Production shifted to Massachusetts for Season Two, with Boston and its surrounding towns standing in for New York locations.

Season three entered production in September and features a change in leadership behind the scenes. Veteran Walking Dead writer Seth Hoffman has taken over as showrunner, replacing Eli Jorné, who guided the series through its first two seasons.

The upcoming season will focus on Maggie and Negan attempting to establish Manhattan’s first functioning community since the outbreak. As new threats emerge, the pair will be forced to confront unresolved tensions from their past.

New cast members joining the season include Aimee Garcia, Jimmi Simpson, and Raúl Castillo, alongside returning series regulars. A premiere date for season three has not yet been announced, but the season is expected to air in 2026.

Residents in the filming area should expect typical production activity, including street closures, parking restrictions, and the presence of crew and equipment during filming hours.
