Trick Williams did not expect one joke about Sami Zayn to turn into one of WWE’s strangest running stories.
The Gingerbread Man idea started as a simple insult during Trick’s feud with Zayn. Over time, it became a full SmackDown storyline with a costumed Gingerbread Man appearing on television, getting attacked by Zayn, and later returning with Lil Yachty before Backlash.
Speaking on the Battle on the Battleground podcast, Trick said the Gingerbread Man diss track began as a throwaway line. He admitted the idea grew far beyond what he originally thought it would become.
Trick also talked about working with Lil Yachty during the storyline. He said they spent hours coming up with ideas together and wanted to make the segments as entertaining as possible.
The United States Champion also joked that he hoped he did not lose too many redheaded fans because of the storyline. He made it clear he had no issue with them and was playing into the feud.
The angle wrapped into Trick’s rivalry with Zayn, which ended with Trick retaining the United States Championship at Backlash. Even after that match, the Gingerbread Man character has continued to live on as one of WWE’s more unusual comedy creations.
