PlayStation 5 Pro console shown as reports suggest Sony could delay the PlayStation 6 until 2029

PS6 Launch Could Slip To 2029

New report says component costs and RAM shortages may delay Sony’s next console

Summary

– A new report suggests Sony could delay the PlayStation 6 until 2028 or 2029

– Rising RAM prices and component shortages may be affecting next-gen console plans

– Sony has not officially announced the PS6 or confirmed any release window

Sony may not be ready to move into the PlayStation 6 era as soon as some fans expected.

A new industry analysis from Embracer Group suggests that rising component costs, tariffs, and the global RAM price surge could affect the timing of Sony’s next console. Early rumors had pointed to a possible next-generation launch around 2027, but that window now looks less certain.

The report said higher RAM costs, driven partly by AI demand, could create problems for console pricing and production. It also noted that some analysts believe Sony may now be considering a later launch for the PS6.

“There are some challenges around the volatility of tariffs in the US as well as an impact from the global increase in RAM prices driven by AI. Both factors could potentially have a negative impact on console retail prices, which would, in turn, hamper market growth. In the longer term, higher RAM costs could also cause operational delays to the launch of future consoles. In fact some analysts believe that Sony is now considering pushing back the debut of its next PlayStation console from 2027 to 2028 or even 2029.”

That does not mean the PlayStation 6 has officially been delayed. Sony has not announced the console, shown hardware, or confirmed any launch plans.

Still, the report gives a possible reason why Sony has stayed quiet about next-generation hardware. Announcing a new console too early could hurt PS5 and PS5 Pro sales, especially if players decide to wait for the next system.

The current console market has also become more expensive than past generations. Sony raised prices on existing PlayStation 5 models earlier this year because of market conditions, and other console makers have faced similar pressure.

That shift has frustrated players because console prices usually fall as a generation gets older. This generation has been different, with hardware becoming more expensive instead of more affordable.

If component prices remain high, Sony may have to decide whether to delay the PS6 or release it at a higher price. Neither option would be ideal for gamers already dealing with rising costs.

For now, the PlayStation 6 remains unannounced. The next major clue may come only when Sony is confident it can launch the system at the right time and price.

Until then, the PS5 generation may last longer than many expected.
