Matt Cardona discusses his WWE return, independent wrestling earnings, and decision to accept a pay cut

Matt Cardona Says WWE Return Came With Pay Cut

Independent success gave him options before his January comeback

Summary

– Matt Cardona says he took a pay cut to return to WWE in January 2026

– He earned more on the independent scene than during his first WWE run

– Cardona believes WWE’s opportunities could lead to greater earnings over time

Matt Cardona says returning to WWE meant accepting less money than he was earning on the independent scene. Despite that tradeoff, he believes the opportunities available through the company justified his decision.

Speaking with Jeremy Jacobowitz, Cardona explained how his outlook changed after WWE released him in 2020. He described the release as the greatest day of his life because it pushed him to rebuild his career.

Cardona knew he could rely on his history with Zack Ryder to keep getting bookings. However, he wanted to establish something beyond the character fans already knew rather than spend his independent run repeating familiar routines.

He pointed to Honky Tonk Man as someone who successfully continued performing a recognizable act. Cardona respected that approach but wanted a different direction for himself.

Reinventing himself became the priority. He remained open to another WWE run while working to build a career that could succeed even if the company never called.

That approach brought financial results. According to Cardona, he made more money outside WWE than he had ever earned during his original stint with the company.

His independent earnings were strong enough that his January 2026 comeback required a financial concession. Cardona said he technically took a pay cut to return, emphasizing how profitable his work elsewhere had become.

He nevertheless described WWE as the ultimate opportunity. Cardona believes a successful return could eventually produce a substantial increase in earnings, making the smaller initial paycheck worthwhile.

He also offered the interview itself as an example of the access WWE provides, noting that the company arranged his conversation with Jacobowitz.

Cardona’s decision reflects confidence in what he built and what he believes comes next. His independent career gave him a successful alternative, while returning to WWE offered opportunities he felt were worth pursuing.
