The actor says the script is amazing and could bring Doc Scurlock back
Summary
– Kiefer Sutherland says the Young Guns 3 script is amazing
– Emilio Estevez believes Doc Scurlock may have survived the events of Young Guns II
– Lou Diamond Phillips indicated that the project is still being developed
Kiefer Sutherland has offered fans one of the most encouraging updates yet on Young Guns 3.
Sutherland recently reunited with Lou Diamond Phillips for a Young Guns panel, where the conversation turned to the long-awaited third installment.
Sutherland played Doc Scurlock in the original 1988 film and its 1990 sequel. Doc appeared to die after being hit by a massive number of bullets in Young Guns II, but Emilio Estevez has apparently never considered the character’s fate completely settled.
Sutherland revealed that Estevez once told him nobody actually saw Doc die. That conversation opened the door to the possibility that Doc could have survived the shooting and return for another chapter.
The idea may sound unlikely, but Sutherland said the script has already made a strong impression on him.
“I promise you, the script is amazing,” Sutherland said while discussing the project. He also confirmed that the story would include himself, Phillips, Estevez, and a new cast.
That would allow Sutherland to return as Doc Scurlock while also expanding the franchise with fresh characters. The original films featured Estevez, Sutherland, Phillips, Charlie Sheen, Dermot Mulroney, and Casey Siemaszko as members of the Regulators.
Phillips also suggested that Christian Slater could return. Slater joined the franchise in Young Guns II as Arkansas Dave Rudabaugh and could bring another familiar face back for the new story.
Young Guns 3 has been in development under the title Young Guns 3: Dead or Alive. Estevez is attached to reprise Billy the Kid and direct, while original screenwriter John Fusco has also been involved.
Sutherland’s support for the script gives the project additional credibility. The actor has not simply acknowledged that a sequel exists; he has described the story as strong enough to bring the original cast back together.
The project still does not have an official release date, and production has not been confirmed. Phillips indicated that Estevez is working to move the film forward, giving fans reason to remain hopeful.
For Sutherland, Young Guns 3 would offer the chance to revisit one of his most memorable early roles. If Doc Scurlock truly survived, the character may finally have another story to tell.
