The wrestling legend receives a permanent tribute near the neighborhood where he grew up
Summary
– Jerry Lawler was honored with a street naming ceremony in Memphis
– A portion of Homer Street now carries Lawler’s name near his childhood neighborhood
– Jimmy Hart, Dave Brown, and Lawler’s son Kevin attended the ceremony
Jerry “The King” Lawler has received another major honor in Memphis, with part of a city street now carrying the wrestling legend’s name.
A portion of Homer Street at Given Avenue near Treadwell Elementary was honorarily renamed for Lawler during a ceremony held Thursday. The location has a personal connection to Lawler, who grew up nearby on Vernon Avenue and regularly walked through the area while attending Treadwell High School.
Lawler reflected on how many memories the neighborhood still holds for him. The ceremony took place close to fields and streets he remembered from his childhood, making the tribute especially meaningful.
Several familiar faces were on hand for the occasion, including Lawler’s son Kevin, Jimmy Hart, and longtime Memphis wrestling announcer Dave Brown. Local political figures also attended as the city officially recognized Lawler’s impact.
Brown used the moment to reflect on Lawler’s career and how far his reputation eventually traveled beyond Memphis. He described Lawler as someone who became a local, regional, national, and eventually international wrestling figure.
The honor had been in the works for several months. Memphis City Council approved the honorary street naming during its June 9 meeting, clearing the way for Lawler’s name to become part of the neighborhood where he grew up.
Lawler’s connection to Memphis wrestling stretches across decades, both as a major in-ring attraction and as one of the key figures associated with the territory’s most successful years.
Now, one of Memphis wrestling’s most recognizable names has a permanent place on the city map.
