– Aldis announced GUNTHER and Sami Zayn against CM Punk and Cody Rhodes
– GUNTHER trapped Aldis in a choke hold until Cody Rhodes rushed toward the ring
GUNTHER’s issues with Nick Aldis exploded again during the July 10 episode of WWE SmackDown.
Aldis officially returned as SmackDown General Manager after being reinstated following his forced administrative leave. That absence came after a previous backstage confrontation with GUNTHER.
Earlier in the show, GUNTHER confronted Aldis and demanded that the situation involving SmackDown’s top championship be corrected.
Aldis later entered the ring and announced a major tag team match for Saturday Night’s Main Event.
GUNTHER will team with Sami Zayn against Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk and Cody Rhodes at Madison Square Garden.
The announcement came after Aldis said Zayn was taking a mental health break and would not appear on SmackDown. Despite that absence, Zayn remains scheduled for the major tag match.
GUNTHER did not respond well to the decision.
The Ring General attacked Aldis, continuing the rivalry that led to the General Manager’s suspension.
GUNTHER then locked Aldis in a chokehold and refused to release it as several WWE officials tried to pull him away.
Aldis was left limp in the ring before Cody Rhodes made his way down to help.
The show ended as Rhodes approached the ring, leaving the confrontation unresolved heading into Saturday Night’s Main Event.
The event is scheduled for July 18 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
WWE also announced that Paige and Brie Bella will team against Fatal Influence during the event.
