Lil Yachty surprise closes bizarre WWE SmackDown segment
Summary
– WWE SmackDown featured a funeral segment for the Gingerbread Man mascot
– Sami Zayn interrupted the ceremony and mocked the entire tribute
– Lil Yachty emerged from the casket before Trick Williams stood tall to end the show
WWE SmackDown closed with one of its strangest segments in recent memory as the blue brand held a full funeral ceremony for the Gingerbread Man mascot.
The May 8 episode from Jacksonville, Florida, included multiple backstage clips throughout the night showing wrestlers paying tribute to the character. Sami Zayn grew increasingly frustrated by the attention the mascot received and made it clear he believed the entire situation existed only to mock him.
The funeral took place during the main event segment, with the ring transformed into a memorial setting. A casket sat in the center of the ring while Trick Williams entered to loud crowd reactions.
Williams opened the ceremony with a short song before WWE aired an intentionally awkward AI-generated tribute video showing the Gingerbread Man in various scenarios. The over-the-top presentation immediately drew mixed reactions from fans in the arena.
Sami Zayn eventually interrupted the segment and mocked nearly every part of the ceremony. He criticized the choir, questioned how much money Trick Williams spent on the funeral, and claimed the entire situation was another attempt to get under his skin before their upcoming Backlash match.
Williams fired back, saying nobody had managed to throw Zayn off mentally quite as he had. The confrontation quickly turned physical when Zayn attacked Williams and stood tall with the United States Championship.
The segment then took another unexpected turn when the Gingerbread Man suddenly rose from the casket. The person inside the costume was revealed to be rapper Lil Yachty, who attacked Sami Zayn with the mascot’s cane.
Williams capitalized moments later by hitting his Trick Shot finisher to close the show. The bizarre segment instantly became one of the episode’s most talked-about moments.
Reports later noted that WWE producer Molly Holly was listed internally as the producer of the segment.
