Kinney told Entertainment Weekly that stepping back into the The Walking Dead universe felt surprisingly natural, despite more than a decade having passed since she last played Beth. Familiar crew members were still involved, and working with Lauren Cohan again made the experience feel especially comfortable.
Kinney said she and Cohan have always had an easy working relationship, particularly during emotional scenes. That connection helped make Beth’s return feel less like revisiting something from the distant past and more like stepping back into a familiar environment.
Dead City’s upcoming episode places Beth inside an alternate timeline where the zombie outbreak never happened. Instead of being forced into survival, Beth was able to leave the family farm and pursue her dream of becoming a musician.
That direction strongly resonated with Kinney because she saw it as a natural path for the character. Beth regularly showed an interest in music during The Walking Dead, making a future built around singing and playing guitar feel consistent with who she was before the apocalypse changed everything.
Kinney also connected personally with Beth’s alternate life. She grew up in Nebraska before moving to New York City as a young adult to pursue music and acting, which gave her an immediate understanding of Beth leaving home to pursue a creative career.
The episode also allows Beth and Maggie to share scenes again after their story ended tragically during The Walking Dead Season 5. Beth was killed during “Coda” just as the sisters were close to being reunited following their separation.
