The Walking Dead: Dead City honored Rif Hutton during its Season 3 premiere.
After the episode’s final scene, the screen faded to black and displayed the message, “In loving memory of Rif Hutton.”
Hutton held a unique role within The Walking Dead universe as one of the performers responsible for creating the walkers’ voices.
The actors portraying walkers on set generally did not produce the growls and moans heard in the finished episodes.
Those sounds were added later by voice performers, including Hutton.
Walking Dead Universe Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple said Hutton had contributed walker voices across every franchise series beginning with the original show’s pilot.
That work made Hutton one of the few performers to appear in every Walking Dead television series.
Hutton died from brain cancer in April 2026 at the age of 73.
Following his death, Gimple remembered him as one of the greatest performers responsible for bringing the walkers to life through sound.
Hutton also had a long career outside The Walking Dead franchise.
He appeared in recurring roles on Doogie Howser, M.D. and J.A.G.
His voice work included projects such as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Angry Birds, and How to Train Your Dragon.
NCIS also honored Hutton in May after he previously appeared twice on the series.
The Dead City Season 3 premiere became the first Walking Dead episode released following his death.
New episodes of Dead City air Sundays on AMC and AMC+ through the scheduled September 13 season finale.
