Norman Reedus isn’t holding back when it comes to describing Daryl Dixon’s latest ordeal. The actor called the explosive season 3 finale of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon “another giant slap in the face” for his character—a painful reset just when things seemed to be going right.

In the episode “Solaz del Mar,” Daryl finally appeared to find peace. After rescuing allies, taking down enemies, and preparing to return home, his hopes literally went up in flames when the group’s boat exploded moments before departure. The blast, caused by Fede’s last-ditch act of revenge, left Daryl and Carol stranded once again.

Reedus told Entertainment Weekly that the event captures Daryl’s constant struggle to escape his cycle of running and fighting. “It’s exhausting to run and fight and run and fight,” Reedus said. “Why can’t Daryl sit still? Why can’t he have relationships with people?” He added that the new season will delve more deeply into those emotional questions as Daryl faces the consequences of the explosion.

Season 3 also reintroduced Romain Levi’s Codron, a character initially meant to die early in the series. Reedus revealed he personally fought to keep Codron alive, hinting that the character will play a major role in the upcoming season.

As The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon heads into its fourth and final chapter, Reedus teased that the focus will shift to Daryl’s inner world: his memories, his trauma, and his search for peace after years of chaos.
