AMC lands a massive global streaming agreement covering all seven franchise series
Summary
– Netflix agreed to pay $500 million for five years of Walking Dead franchise rights
– The co-exclusive agreement includes the original series and all six spinoffs
– AMC+ will begin streaming the original Walking Dead series early next year
Netflix is expanding its relationship with AMC Global Media through a five-year agreement reportedly worth $500 million. The deal gives the platform co-exclusive streaming rights to the original Walking Dead series and its six spinoffs.
All 371 episodes across the franchise will become available in additional international markets, including the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand. Netflix has carried The Walking Dead in the United States through physical and streaming distribution since 2011.
The package includes Fear the Walking Dead, Daryl Dixon, Dead City, The Ones Who Live, World Beyond, and Tales of the Walking Dead. Its co-exclusive structure also allows AMC+ to add the original series to its service early next year.
AMC announced the agreement alongside its second-quarter financial results. Although the company fell short of Wall Street expectations, it raised its full-year guidance partly due to new streaming revenue.
The Walking Dead premiered on Halloween in 2010 and became one of AMC’s most important franchises. Its original series lasted 11 seasons before expanding into a television universe built around returning characters and new locations.
Netflix believes the franchise can continue attracting viewers after nearly 15 years on its platform. AMC CEO Kristin Dolan described the agreement as a way to create a worldwide destination where fans can access every Walking Dead series and episode.
