Kiefer Sutherland and Barry Pepper are facing off in a new western currently filming in Alberta.
The Horseman is being directed by Rod Lurie, with production taking place in Calgary and rural Alberta. According to ACTRA Alberta, filming began last month and is expected to wrap next Thursday.
Pepper stars as The Man, a grieving husband and father living in the late 1800s American West during an oil rush. After losing his family, he adopts a young colt, but his world changes again when he is separated from the animal.
Sutherland plays the film’s main villain, a wealthy aristocrat driven by ego, violence, and the need to prove his superiority. The role puts him back in familiar western territory.
The cast also includes C. Thomas Howell, Tzi Ma, and Ryan Michelle Bathe.
Pepper co-wrote the screenplay with Ed Gass-Donnelly. He is known for Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile, 61*, The Kennedys, and True Grit.
Sutherland also has deep ties to the genre. His western credits include Young Guns, Young Guns II, The Cowboy Way, and Forsaken, which was also filmed in Alberta and co-starred his father, Donald Sutherland.
Lurie has his own Alberta connection after directing Resurrecting the Champ in Calgary and working on shows such as Hell on Wheels and Damnation.
The Horseman is being produced by Calgary-based Nomadic Pictures, whose past credits include Hell on Wheels, Fargo, Klondike, and Broken Trail.
Alberta is also hosting another western production, with a television remake of The Magnificent Seven starring Matt Dillon currently underway.
The Horseman is expected to arrive in theaters in 2027.
