The proposed class action lawsuit, Walker et al v. Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. Plaintiffs Amorey Walker and Bryce Foster-Quarles argue that some PS5 buyers should receive compensation after tariffs connected to earlier price hikes were overturned.
Sony raised prices on PS5 hardware in 2025, with the standard console, Digital Edition, and PS5 Pro each increasing by $50. The company pointed to a difficult economic climate at the time, including tariff pressure.
The lawsuit claims Sony benefited after those tariffs were later invalidated. The plaintiffs argue that customers who bought consoles at the higher price should not be left paying extra if the tariff-related cost no longer applies.
The filing accuses Sony of receiving a windfall by keeping the higher pricing in place instead of passing any relief back to customers.
The lawsuit arrives amid broader frustration over PlayStation costs. Sony has also raised short-term PlayStation Plus pricing in select regions, with the one-month Essential plan in the United States moving from $9.99 to $10.99 beginning May 20.
The three-month PlayStation Plus Essential plan also increased from $24.99 to $27.99. Sony cited ongoing market conditions for that subscription change.
The case does not guarantee refunds for PS5 buyers. It will now have to move through the court process, where Sony will have the chance to respond to the claims.
For PlayStation fans, the lawsuit adds another layer to the growing debate over console prices, subscriptions, and how much of the rising cost of gaming should be borne by customers.
