Spine specialist strongly advised against risky in-ring return
Summary
– Big E says doctor nearly begged him not to return to wrestling
– Neck failed to form new bone properly after 2022 injury
– Former WWE Champion now considers himself officially retired
Big E has officially closed the door on his in-ring career, and the decision was heavily influenced by medical advice.
Nearly four years after suffering a broken neck on SmackDown in 2022, the former WWE Champion revealed that his neck has not healed the way doctors originally hoped. While he can live without daily pain, the structural recovery needed for a safe return never fully materialized.
Speaking with The Takedown on SI, Big E detailed a powerful conversation with spine specialist Dr. Juan Uribe and other medical professionals. He said the doctor strongly urged him to reconsider any comeback, even if he were medically cleared. When Big E told him he was leaning toward retirement, the response was relief.
The injury occurred after a mistimed overhead belly-to-belly suplex during a match with Ridge Holland. Despite the frightening moment, Big E has consistently refused to place blame on Holland and holds no resentment over how the situation unfolded.
Perspective played a major role in his final choice. He reflected on seeing veteran wrestlers during WrestleMania weekend, many of whom were dealing with chronic pain and mobility issues. That reality made him evaluate the long-term cost of another run.
Although his days between the ropes are over, Big E remains active within WWE. He continues to appear on premium live event pre-shows and post-shows while also expanding into other ventures, including a YouTube project focused on the NFL Draft.
Big E appears at peace with the decision, choosing long-term health over the uncertainty of one more comeback.
