New firmware introduces read receipts and streamlined game joining
Summary
– Update 26.01 adds read receipts for messages and gradual rollout logic
– Players can now join friends’ games directly from the Welcome Hub widget
– PlayStation 4 also receives a minor security patch with version 13.04
Sony has officially deployed the first system software update of the year for PlayStation 5 users. Version 26.01-12.60.00 is live right now and brings a few tangible quality-of-life improvements to the console interface.
The biggest change is the introduction of read receipts for direct messages. Users can now enable this feature within the privacy settings under the Users and Accounts menu. Once active, this function allows friends to see when you have viewed their messages, though Sony notes the rollout might be gradual for some accounts.
Another key feature focuses on getting players into multiplayer matches faster. The Welcome Hub now supports a direct join function within the Friends Activity widget. This lets you jump into a game session your friend is currently playing without navigating multiple menus.
Owners of previous-generation hardware are also getting a download today. PlayStation 4 system software version 13.04 is available alongside the current-gen patch. This update is strictly limited to security fixes and does not include any new user-facing features.
Both updates are available for download immediately worldwide.
