A planned DC movie never reached production
Summary
– Jeffrey Dean Morgan discussed playing Lobo after The Losers
– He connected with the character’s humor and planned to bulk up
– The project stalled before Morgan could portray the bounty hunter
Jeffrey Dean Morgan could have brought Lobo to the big screen years before Jason Momoa played the character in Supergirl. According to Morgan, discussions about starring in a standalone movie were serious, but the project never came together.
Speaking with Josh Horowitz on Happy Sad Confused, Morgan recalled producer Akiva Goldsman approaching the idea after their work on The Losers, released in 2010.
“Akiva Goldsman, the producer who did Losers, had the rights to Lobo,” Morgan said. “That was real talk. I wanted to do it.”
Morgan initially knew little about the DC bounty hunter. Once he explored the character, however, he found that Lobo’s sarcasm and sense of humor matched his own.
The physical demands were another matter. Morgan acknowledged that he would need to build considerable muscle, but believed he had enough preparation time to transform.
“It suited my humor and sarcasm, and all that. It didn’t suit my body,” he said. “But I was like, ‘I’ve got time. I’ve got a year to get big.’”
Guy Ritchie had been attached to direct the film before departing to work on the Sherlock Holmes sequel. Morgan also recalled a script that still needed development.
He suggested that Warner Bros.’ experience with Watchmen and The Losers may have affected its enthusiasm for another DC adaptation. Morgan presented that as his own assessment, joking that the studio might also have been losing enthusiasm for him.
The Lobo movie ultimately remained unmade. Morgan later appeared as Thomas Wayne in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, while Momoa eventually brought the bounty hunter to theaters in Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl.
