Cloud exclusivity could give PC players launch access
Summary
– Xbox reportedly secured exclusive cloud streaming rights for GTA VI at launch
– New streaming limits and pay-as-you-go access arrive in November
– The agreement’s duration remains unclear
Xbox has reportedly secured exclusive cloud streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto VI, potentially giving players without a console another way to access the game at launch.
According to The Verge, sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans said the agreement would make Xbox Cloud Gaming the only cloud streaming service offering GTA VI when it releases. The report did not establish how long that exclusivity would last.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma teased the initiative during an employee all-hands on October 6, telling staff Microsoft was preparing something around GTA VI that “no other platform holder is doing.”
Rockstar Games has not announced a PC version. Cloud access could therefore allow PC players to stream the game without purchasing an Xbox Series X/S or PlayStation 5.
The reported agreement comes as Microsoft prepares changes to Xbox Cloud Gaming in November, the same month GTA VI is scheduled to launch.
Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will receive 15 streaming hours, Premium subscribers will receive 10, and Essential subscribers will receive five under the new limits.
Microsoft is also introducing a pay-as-you-go option, allowing players to purchase bundles of streaming hours without a Game Pass subscription. Pricing and the duration of the reported GTA VI agreement remain important details for anyone considering that route.
During the same employee meeting, Sharma described Project Helix, Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox hardware, as a “family of devices.” She said Microsoft would work with partners on some of those products.
The reported streaming deal could expand GTA VI’s launch audience, particularly among players using PCs and phones. Its value will depend partly on the cost of cloud access and how many hours players expect to spend in the game.
