Summary

– Dave Bautista has been cast as Kratos in Amazon’s God of War series

– Bautista replaces Ryan Hurst after an injury forced production plans to change

– Filming is expected to restart with previously completed Kratos scenes being reshot

Dave Bautista is officially taking over the role of Kratos in Amazon Prime Video’s live-action God of War series.

According to Variety, the former WWE Champion and Guardians of the Galaxy star has landed the lead role after Ryan Hurst was forced to step away because of an injury suffered during production. Hurst had previously been announced as Kratos but reportedly tore his bicep on set and required surgery.

Hurst’s recovery would have delayed production into 2027, leading Amazon and Sony to move forward with a recast rather than wait. Bautista had already been discussed for the role, and the deal is now reportedly complete.

With Bautista taking over, production is expected to resume in the coming weeks. Scenes already filmed with Hurst as Kratos will also need to be reshot with Bautista in the role.

Amazon has already ordered two seasons of God of War, with plans to film them back-to-back. Production originally began in Vancouver in February before Hurst’s injury disrupted the schedule.

The series will adapt the story of the two most recent God of War games, following Kratos and his son, Atreus, as they travel to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ late wife, Faye. Their journey centers on Kratos trying to teach Atreus how to become a better god while Atreus helps his father reconnect with his humanity.

Callum Vinson remains attached to play Atreus, while the supporting cast includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.

Ronald D. Moore is serving as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, while Frederick E.O. Toye is set to direct the first two episodes.

Bautista has continued building a major Hollywood career since stepping away from full-time wrestling, and Kratos now gives him one of the biggest video game roles of his career. Amazon may have lost time because of the casting change, but production now has its new lead and is preparing to move forward again.
