Charlotte Flair has built a historic WWE career, but she still feels motivated to prove herself outside the shadow of her father, Ric Flair.
During a recent interview with Busted Open Radio, Flair discussed how a younger generation of fans now associates the Flair name with her rather than with the two-time WWE Hall of Famer.
Despite establishing her own identity, Charlotte admitted that her father’s legendary status still gives her a chip on her shoulder.
“He’s such an icon,” Flair said. “I’m so proud to be his kid.”
Charlotte explained that Ric’s passion for professional wrestling should inspire others to find something they love just as deeply.
She also believes the past year has been the most versatile of her career.
Her partnership with Alexa Bliss allowed her to explore comedy, vulnerability, and different character traits that audiences rarely saw during her championship reigns.
Although Charlotte still believes she should be presented as a leading attraction, she sees a larger purpose behind her current tag team run.
Flair feels the partnership has helped fans connect with her beyond the championships, elaborate robes, and dominant persona that defined much of her career.
She admitted that presenting a vulnerable side was difficult because audiences struggled to sympathize with Ric Flair’s daughter after she had already won numerous championships and participated in major events.
Charlotte credited WWE Unreal and her Players’ Tribune article with helping fans understand the personal struggles and sacrifices behind her career.
She has since worked to combine her glamorous presentation with the more relaxed version of herself people might encounter away from television.
Flair also reflected on the role her late brother Reid played in beginning her wrestling journey.
During a 2012 dinner involving Ric, Reid, and WWE executive John Laurinaitis, Charlotte was asked why she had not considered becoming a wrestler.
Reid encouraged his sister to accept the challenge.
Charlotte began training approximately three months later despite having no clear expectations about becoming a WWE Superstar.
She revealed that she felt lost after college and lacked direction while working as a personal trainer.
“I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Reid,” Charlotte said.
Flair spent years believing she needed to protect her brother, but she now recognizes that Reid helped save her by providing a new path in life.
Charlotte also recalled receiving valuable advice from her father about age and longevity.
Ric reminded her that he was approximately 42 years old when he produced his celebrated series of matches against Ricky Steamboat.
The conversation encouraged Charlotte to stop viewing age as a limitation on what she can still accomplish.
Flair identified her 2014 NXT TakeOver match against Natalya as one of the defining moments of her career.
She believes the match proved she deserved to be taken seriously as a performer instead of being promoted as Ric Flair’s daughter.
Charlotte also named her WrestleMania match against Asuka as another defining performance.
However, when asked to identify the greatest match of her career, Flair made it clear that she remains focused on the future.
“It hasn’t happened yet,” she said.
