Zach Gowen Retires After 24 Years

Zach Gowen Announces Retirement After 24 Years

The former WWE wrestler reflects on fan support, recovery and a treasured night with his family.

Summary

– Zach Gowen has announced the end of his 24-year in-ring career

– He thanked fans for accepting him as a professional wrestler

– His AEW appearance in front of his family stands as his favorite career moment

Zach Gowen has retired from in-ring competition, closing a wrestling career that began in 2002 and took him through WWE, independent promotions and a memorable AEW appearance.

Gowen announced the decision on Facebook alongside photographs from the beginning and end of his career. His message focused on gratitude toward the promoters who booked him and the fans who supported his work over 24 years.

He explained that becoming a wrestler had been his ambition from childhood. Wrestling gave him direction when he needed it, and the audience’s willingness to embrace him as a legitimate performer allowed him to fulfill that ambition.

Although many fans first encountered Gowen during his WWE run, he chose a much later appearance as the highlight of his career. Wrestling for AEW while his wife, children and parents watched meant more to him than any other moment he described.

That match took place against Ricochet at the May 14, 2025, Dynamite Beach Break special at the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Gowen lost the bout, but his retirement statement made clear that the result was secondary to what the occasion represented.

Gowen reflected on his struggles with drug addiction and the opportunity to rebuild his life and reconnect with wrestling. Sharing that return with his family made the AEW appearance particularly meaningful. He credited his faith and the people who invested in him for helping him reach that point.

His WWE tenure included an alliance with Hulk Hogan’s Mr. America character and a rivalry involving Roddy Piper and Sean O’Haire. He continued working elsewhere after leaving WWE in 2004.

More recently, Gowen remained involved behind the scenes, working in production for Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling’s Northern Rising event on October 3. His announcement brings his time as an active wrestler to a close after a career he described with appreciation for those who made it possible.
