– Personal stories reveal the fathers behind their public personas

Cody Rhodes, Charlotte Flair and O’Shea Jackson Jr. joined Jacob Heyman on HeymanHustleTV’s The Roundtable for a discussion about growing up with famous fathers and building identities of their own.

Heyman, the son of Paul Heyman, opened the conversation by addressing the opportunities celebrity parents can provide, as well as the expectations placed on their children. The guests described experiences that stretched beyond their professional lives into friendships, privacy, and family relationships.

Rhodes recalled initially knowing Dusty Rhodes primarily as a father who wanted to be involved at home. A crowd’s overwhelming reaction to Dusty outside an Atlanta wrestling venue helped him understand how differently the public saw his dad.

Cody also pushed back against the assumption that his work ethic was simply because of his famous surname. He credited his mother with shaping that determination and explained that he was already motivated to work hard without outside reminders about his father’s legacy.

Charlotte described a different kind of pressure. Rather than focusing solely on matching Ric Flair’s accomplishments, she often felt responsible for protecting his legacy while establishing the differences between their personalities.

She remembered gaining a fuller understanding of his significance during his retirement match against Shawn Michaels in 2008. Years later, her own wrestling career has helped her appreciate both his dedication to performing and the sacrifices involved.

Jackson discussed finding his direction beyond Ice Cube’s achievements. He explained that outside comparisons can make a family connection difficult to enjoy, even when those expectations never came from the parent.

The conversation also allowed Heyman to share his perspective. He recalled discovering his father’s television persona as a child and spoke affectionately about their relationship.

“My dad’s played a heel on TV for 40 years, and he’s the biggest babyface of my life.”

Throughout the discussion, professional ambition gave way to personal memories. The shared experience was less about competing with their fathers than about understanding their influence as they decided what to build themselves.
